Reliance wants its Jamnagar complex to become the world's first fully autonomous refinery, powered by AI.

Reliance Industries wants to build something that has never existed: a refinery that runs almost entirely on its own. The company unveiled the plan for its Jamnagar complex in India during its 49th Annual General Meeting, where Executive Director Anant Ambani described an end-to-end shift toward AI and digital control.
Jamnagar already ranks among the largest refining sites on Earth. Layering full autonomy onto that scale is what makes the announcement land.
At the center of the plan sits a proprietary system for feedstock optimization. Inputs adjust automatically, yields climb, and human oversight shrinks to a fraction of what it once was. Digital logistics platforms and smart contract tools round out the picture, tightening the oil-to-chemicals chain from end to end. Together, these pieces aim to cut costs, reduce waste, and speed up throughput.
Ripples from this shift will reach far beyond Jamnagar's gates. Companies across Asia Pacific that source petrochemicals depend on steady, predictable supply. An autonomous refinery promises exactly that: more consistent output and quicker reaction to feedstock price swings. Manufacturers feel it. So do logistics firms and, eventually, everyday consumers.
There's a competitive angle too. When one company sets the pace on industrial automation, rivals rarely sit still for long.
But the bigger story here isn't about beating competitors. It's about proving that aging energy infrastructure doesn't need to be torn down to be transformed. Refineries worldwide have struggled for years to modernize without massive capital outlays. If Jamnagar's model works, it could hand the whole industry a faster path forward than incremental upgrades ever offered.
Ambani framed the announcement as more than an efficiency play. He called it a reinvention of what a refinery can be in the 21st century. Whether Reliance actually pulls it off remains to be seen. But if it does, Jamnagar won't just be a refinery anymore. It'll be a blueprint.
